Through a quick search on a laptop, tablet or phone we have access to a world of information , but it’s still not always easy to find what you are looking for, or to ensure it’s reliable.
Here are some ideas about where you can find the information for some of the questions in the competition Research Report.
Q1: Investment Case
We would do this last! Give us the key points and strongest arguments from all of your research. Be bold and make your case.
Q2: Company Profile
To really understand the business, look at their Investor Relations (IR) website. There are links to all the companies’ IR websites in the Company Crib Sheet, or just google it!
Q3: SWOT Analysis
Collect evidence by googling the company name and “news” or “strengths” and “weaknesses”.
Is the information source reliable and reputable? If you’re not sure, check out the list of websites at the back of the Companies Crib Sheet.
Cross reference your information – can you find the evidence from more than one source?
Question everything and tell us what YOU think! What does the company do really well? Are they missing any opportunities? All companies have weaknesses and face threats, but what are they doing to tackle them?
Q4: Financial Facts
The information is all in a company’s Annual Report which you can get from the IR website, or google “Company Annual Report” and the year you want.
Use the “Find” function (Ctrl f) to search for “Consolidated Income Statement” or look in the Accounts section.
Junior teams just need to provide the Sales figures (also called Total Revenue or Turnover), and for Senior teams, we can send you a Financial Facts Excel template to record your figures.
Q5: Share Price Chart
This can get you a share price chart for your report in less than 2 minutes!
This is a video of Christine Montgomery explaining what a share price chart tells you and how to create one on https://uk.finance.yahoo.com
Alternatively, here are the instructions:
- Put https://uk.finance.yahoo.com into browser
- Search for the company name
- Click on the Share Price Chart image or click on the “Chart” tab
- Alter the date range for anything between 1 day and 5 years, or a custom range using the calendar
- Click on “Comparison” to add in a competitor to show how the different companies shares are performing
- Export and save a copy of your chart by clicking on “Share” and selecting the “Download” image. You can the save this image as png, jpg or other file as suits you to include in your research report.
Q6: Environmental, Social & Governance
The company’s IR website will tell you about their environmental and social policies and also about the company’s Board and leadership team. Consider if it might only be presenting the good stuff and double check their claims. If you were the company, you would be bound to blow your own trumpet wouldn’t you?
