Tell us a bit about yourself and your background
I’m from an agricultural background in rural Aberdeenshire, where we farm both livestock and arable crops, and I went to Meldrum Academy. I am entering my third year at the University of St Andrews, pursuing a BSc in Financial Economics. Within the university’s Global Investment Group (GIG), a $20,000 student-led fund, I hold the position of Fund Analyst, where I have the opportunity to prepare pitches by executing fundamental analysis and market research. Generally, I have a particular interest in private equity focused on agricultural investment.
What was your experience like with Future Asset?
To be perfectly candid, when I first entered the Future Asset competition, it was a teacher who twisted my arm to take part. That being said, without the competition, I would never have had the opportunities and connections I’ve gained through FA.
Personally, my experience with FA post-competition has actually been the most influential part. I’ve received a huge amount of support for my endeavors and have been fortunate enough to attend various FA events.
The competition itself provides the building blocks for market analysis and investing and is a great opportunity to connect with industry professionals who guide you through the process.
What are your current career goals or aspirations?
My early career goals are to get my foot in the door of the industry. From there, with experience under my belt, I would love to find the intersection of finance and agriculture and be involved in financing agricultural companies that strive for sustainability. I am fascinated by the variations in agricultural practices by country, so any opportunity to learn about that through my work would be brilliant.
What advice would you give to students thinking about considering a career in finance?
I truly believe in the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone. It sounds cliché, and it’s something I don’t particularly enjoy, but I’ve never regretted doing it. I wasn’t particularly enthused by the prospect of extra work during lunchtimes and after school to prepare our pitch for the FA competition, but I am absolutely thrilled that I did. By taking part, you’re investing in your future and unlocking opportunities in a competitive industry.
