Tell us a bit about yourself and your background
My name is Emilie, I’m from Fort William and I went to Lochaber High School. I took part in Future Asset during the 2021/2022 competition cycle and I am now studying journalism at Edinburgh Napier University.
What was your experience like with Future Asset?
I got involved with Future Asset in my 5th year of high school and since then have stayed involved with the competition, through attending events which have continued to be valuable to me as I develop my career. I have always enjoyed the good spirits and positive attitude at Future Asset, from back when I took part in the competition to the more recent alumnae events. Everyone involved has been very encouraging and supportive which meant a lot to me when I first moved to Edinburgh to begin my studies. Future Asset has had a huge impact on my life in many ways: I gained a scholarship with the Personal Asset Foundation through networking at an FA event which has been immensely helpful to me. The connections I have made through Future Asset are still significant to me almost five years on from taking part in the competition when I was sixteen.
What are your current career goals or aspirations?
My current career aspirations aren’t set in stone but remain centered around communications and research. As I am studying journalism, I have an interest in the media and particularly writing columns on geopolitics, technology, and sustainability which are niches I have a passion for. I want to take part in work that makes a difference to the world – though whether that’s through the power of PR or through directly influencing policy is still unclear to me!
What advice would you give to students thinking about getting involved with Future Asset or considering a career in finance?
I would recommend any young student interested in developing themselves to get involved with Future Asset. You don’t necessarily have to have an interest in finance, I certainly didn’t when I first got involved. Taking part is a fantastic opportunity to gain new, genuinely valuable skills and to network with incredible people from all walks of life.
